Designing Differently:

What’s New in the Rhino 9 Beta

The next major evolution of Rhinoceros 3D is closer than ever. Moving out of its early development phase, Rhino 9 has officially entered Public Beta. For designers, architects, and makers across New Zealand and Australia, this feature-complete beta offers a hands-on look at a toolset designed to remove modelling friction and let your ideas lead.

To help you navigate these updates, we have compiled a comprehensive directory of new Rhino 9 commands at the bottom of this page, complete with plain-language summaries of what they do and how they shape your workflow here:

Here is a breakdown of the core modelling, drafting, and workflow pillars driving the Rhino 9 release.

Advanced Geometry and Surface Control

Rhino 9 introduces tools that focus heavily on positional accuracy and smoothing complex form transitions:

  • Enhanced Continuity: The completely overhauled Patch tool provides vastly superior edge matching and continuity controls when bridging complex wireframes or open surface edges.
  • SubD Precision Alignment: For organic shape exploration, the new SubDMatch command allows you to accurately map a subdivision edge chain directly to a target curve or surface edge.
  • Geometric Analysis: Commands like GlobalEdgeContinuity allow you to quickly analyze G0, G1, and G2 gaps across multiple intersecting surfaces to guarantee your files are production-ready.

Next-Gen Layouts and Drafting Symbols

Documenting an idea is just as vital as modeling it. This release delivers massive upgrades to presentation layouts and 2D drafting:

  • Custom Detail Borders: You are no longer restricted to rigid rectangular layout viewports. The SetDetailBorder tool lets you instantly replace detail borders with any closed, arbitrary curve.
  • Native Hatch Editing: The interactive HatchPattern tool lets you generate, edit, or deform custom patterns right inside the viewport without hunting for external pattern files.
  • Advanced Sections and Annotations: Fully integrated GeometricTolerance frames, new drafting symbols, and ClippingDrawings extract clean, automated 2D graphics straight from your 3D models.

Effortless Micro-Workflows

A smoother workflow comes down to fixing the operations you perform fifty times a day. Rhino 9 reduces day-to-day modeling friction with smart utility additions:

  • Local Scaling: Use ScaleEach to scale a massive group of objects independently from their respective local origins rather than distorting their world positions.
  • Base-Point Clipboard Actions: New targeted clipboard operations like CopyToClipboardAt, CutAt, and PasteAt give you precise base-point control when moving geometry across design spaces.
  • Interactive Tool Control: Advanced array patterns via ArrayCrvAdvanced and soft grip manipulations using SoftTransform make geometric exploration completely seamless.

Design differently.

Your imagination isn't two-dimensional.
Neither should your CAD be.

Imagine…   Explore freely.   Express precisely.

Before there's a model, there's an idea. Something you can see in your head but haven't yet worked out. A shape. A possibility. A problem that needs a different solution.

The designer brings the idea. The process of designing reveals what the idea can become. The software should enable that process without getting in the way.

That's where Rhino comes in.

Contemporary building designed with Rhino

The software doesn't lead.
The idea does.

Good design doesn't always begin with a fully defined solution.

You start with an idea. You test it. You change it. You see something you hadn't seen before.

Rhino gives you a direct way to work with the geometry of your design, so you can develop the idea as you think it through.

Explore an idea far enough, and new possibilities emerge.

The software isn't deciding the destination. It gives you the freedom to discover it.

An idea evolving through exploration, testing, refinement and iteration

Explore freely.

Freeform surface exploration in Rhino

Design is rarely a straight line. You discover something by trying it. Then you change it. Then something else becomes possible.

The process itself becomes part of the discovery.

Express precisely.

Precise complex form developed in Rhino

Exploration is useful when what you discover can become something precise. Rhino brings freedom and accuracy together, retaining the precision needed to measure, communicate, share and make the design.

Freedom to explore. Precision to deliver.

Rhino in your toolkit.

Rhino is a mature, comprehensive design tool that can carry an idea from its first possibility through to precise, finished geometry.

A broad design tool.

Surface, solid, SubD and mesh modelling sit alongside drafting, analysis, documentation and manufacturing tools.

Built around complex form.

Rhino works with complex, freeform shapes as naturally as it works with precise geometry.

Works with your toolkit.

You don't have to abandon specialist tools that already serve a useful part of your workflow.

A companion when needed.

Use Rhino for the whole process or where its particular strengths are most valuable.

Works with the tools you already use.

Rhino supports a remarkably broad range of CAD, 3D, mesh, drawing and manufacturing formats.

  • Bring geometry into Rhino.
  • Develop and refine it.
  • Move it into other tools when required.
  • Keep the tools that work best for you.
CAD file compatibilityBring it in. Work with it. Take it wherever it needs to go.

Whatever you're designing, start with the idea.
